Saturday May 11th heralded the return of the Annual Village Boat Race. Last year’s event was cancelled due to course conditions – no water in the river.
Another bumper crowd in attendance to witness some 20 competitors, launching boats of all shapes and sizes, extravagantly decorated and battle hardened. Years of refinement and competition have taken the designs way beyond the ‘cocktail stick in a potato’- we are now at the ‘cocktail stick in a shoe’ stage.
Admiral Havill surveyed the fleet and split the boats into several heats. This year the course was shortened due to a nesting swan ( not the only swan in the village ) at the hairpin bend. It was to be a straight sprint and indeed the course record was shattered.
ere tricky due to the wind getting up and blowing back up the course – those who had carried a lot of sail were left red-faced at their naivety. The old ‘two blocks of wood, nailed together’ proved to be the design for the day.
The Champion of champions was once again Lorna Havill.
We repaired to the paddock for a warm sausage and refreshment provided by Havill and Jimenez catering.
Congratulations to all. Money raised was donated to the Church.
this is a rallying call for a working party to help clear and ‘pretty up’ the land we have at the North end of the village.
SUNDAY 2ND : 2pm-4pm.
Please bring your gloves and any equipment you think might be useful,
organized by Carol Davies and her band of helpers in Ogbourne st. Andrew Church.
About 20 volunteers staffed the stalls; including teas, cakes, wreaths & flowers, preserves & Christmas puds, Art exhibits and of course Santa’s Grotto.
The event was well attended by folk of all ages and managed to raise over £1000 for the General Church Fund.
Well done to all and thank-you for your generosity.
I’ve added a few more pictures in the photos section
